Special guardians behind Beijing Winter Olympics

Updated: 2022-03-02

The closing ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics was held on Feb 20.

During the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics, Long March Tianmin was the general contractor of the ground stage system.

While viewers were enthralled by the show, the Long March Tianmin Winter Olympics project team, who worked behind the scenes, could not witness the performance themselves.

Every second of the closing ceremony demanded great effort. The Winter Olympics project team worked meticulously, down to controlling the angles that flags flew at.

The Olympic flag, for example, presented a special challenge. Unlike the Chinese flag, the Olympic flag did not have a support pole. Wang Bo and his team had to try hundreds of solutions before finding something that worked. As a result, the Olympic flag was able to fly high in the air.

"To undertake this huge project, no matter how hard or tired I feel, I always feel that I have unlimited motivation," said Guo Baoling, construction manager of the Long March Tianmin Winter Olympics project.

On the day of the opening ceremony, Guo Baoling returned to his hometown in Chengde, Hebei province and sat around the TV with his family members.

Watching the ceremony, he explained his work triumphantly. At that moment, his family understood much more deeply why he had to work so hard and so long to make this Olympic moment possible.
